What it is, how to use it and some usage tips
Fishing with imitations of worm is a very popular technique in fly fishing, as it simulates small worms or larvae that fish naturally find in both rivers and lakes. This lure is particularly useful for trout, char and other predatory fish that often feed on invertebrates. The worm imitation looks like a simple artificial fly made of elastic materials and coloured chenille, such as the 'San Juan Worm' or the 'Squirmy Worm'.
What is a Worm in Fly Fishing?
The worm is an artificial fly that imitates the small worms or larvae found in streams and lake bottoms. Made from materials such as chenille, elastic threads or coloured silicone, the worm has a sinuous movement that is attractive to predatory fish. The most common colours are red, pink, brown, orange, green and white.
How to Use Worm Imitations in Fly Fishing
River fishing
Equipment
- A 10′ # 2/3 fly rod ideal for fishing in rivers and streams.
- Use a long leader with a floating tail
Launch and Positioning
Cast upstream from the fish's position, letting the worm sink and move naturally with the current. In the river, it is essential to let the bait sink and follow the bottom, where fish are wont to look for food.
Recovery and Technique
- Passive DriftLet the worm follow the current, moving naturally. Drift fishing is effective because the worm floats as naturally as a worm moved by the current would.
- Short Movements: If you want to stimulate the fish's interest, you can make small movements with the rod, making the bait hop around on the bottom.
When to Use the Worm in the River
The worm is particularly effective after rain or in turbid water conditions, when worms can be transported in the water. Moreover, in warmer periods, when fish move towards the bottom, the worm is an ideal bait.
Lake fishing
Equipment
- Use a 10/11′ rod for # 7/8, which allows you to tackle the biggest fish in the lake and cast farther.
- Prefer a sinking or semi-sinking tail to reach the bottom of the lake, where the worm is most effective.
Launch and Positioning
Throw the worm near the bottom of the lake or near submerged vegetation and let it sink. In lakes, fish tend to look for food near the bottom or among vegetation.
Recovery and Technique
- Slow Retrieve: Carry out a slow retrieve, which makes the worm move in a zig-zag pattern close to the bottom. This stimulates the interest of the fish, especially if it moves slowly between the crevices.
- Snapshot RecoveryIt alternates short pulls and pauses, simulating the natural movement of a worm. This technique is particularly effective when the fish are actively hunting.
- Static Bung Fishing: Fishing in a small body of water can create many situations where adapting to the conditions is crucial, and sometimes this means fishing with a plug/bung. It is a widely used method and offers an extremely exciting sport when the fish prefer a static fly. It is an ideal method for fishing with worm, salmon egg imitation and buzzers.
The only way to describe 'the Bung' is as a float, a bite indicator. It is designed to suspend a single fly or a group of flies at a certain depth, allowing your fly to fish in the catch zone for longer than when using a conventional sinking fly line.
There are many types of fly bung on the market but my personal choice is a fly bung; they can be anything from a big dry fly to a big foam fly. Again, it is a matter of personal choice.
You should have a selection of black, orange, yellow and white colours (they are by far the best) depending on the light. Carrying a range of colours will ensure you are equipped for different lights during the day.
Bites can be very delicate, so keep contact with your plug and watch it carefully because you have to be quick to cast. Do not ferret too hard as you are more likely to pull the hook out of the trout's mouth, simply ferret as if you were fishing with a dry fly.
Where and When to Use the Worm in the Lake
- The best spots are the seabed near algae beds, rocks and submerged reefs, where fish look for larvae and worms.
- In cool periods or late spring, when fish activity on the bottom is most intense, the worm is very effective.
Combinations
In lakes, it is possible to use the worm in combination with other flies, such as a nymph or a salmon egg made of Eggstacy 5 or 15 mm. In this way, the worm attracts the fish's attention while the other baits offer a diversion, increasing the chances of catching them.
Construction material
The best material to build the worm is 5 mm or 15 mm Eggstacy, Gummy Chenille or Squirmy Worm (silicone material) can also be used
Extra Tips for Using the Worm
Changing Colour and Size: In lakes or rivers with high fishing pressure, trying different colours and sizes can make all the difference. Red and pink are particularly attractive in murky water, while colours such as brown or green are more natural in clear water. Purple is particularly effective for grayling fishing!
